Stay Safe Stay Mobile

Staying Mobile for a Lifetime of Independence.

Stay Safe Stay Mobile book cover

Why this book

Staying mobile starts with your own body, the exercises that keep your legs and balance strong, and the aids, a cane, a walker, a wheelchair, that let you keep moving confidently when you need extra support. This book covers all of it honestly: how to choose the right aid, how to use it safely, and how to keep building strength rather than quietly losing it.

From there, the book moves into transportation. On average, seniors outlive their ability to drive safely by seven to ten years, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, yet 83% of older drivers say they have never talked with a family member or doctor about whether to keep driving. This book starts with an honest, no-judgment self-check of your own driving fitness, then covers vehicle choice, extreme-weather driving, and every real alternative once driving isn't the right choice: paid and free senior transport, public transit, accessible options, and how to actually have the family conversation without it turning into a fight. The goal isn't to take independence away, at any stage. It's to make sure you always have a way to keep it, on your feet, with an aid, behind the wheel, or not.

What you'll learn

  • Choose and use the right mobility aid, cane, walker, or wheelchair, with confidence
  • Build and maintain the strength and balance that keep you moving on your own
  • Run an honest five-minute self-check of your own driving fitness
  • Learn how to have the family driving conversation with care, from either side of it
  • Choose, maintain, and drive your vehicle safely through extreme weather
  • Build a breakdown kit and know exactly what to do the moment you're stranded
  • Compare paid senior transport, from concierge rideshare to NEMT, honestly
  • Find free and low-cost community transport most people never hear about
  • Navigate ADA paratransit, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and traveling with oxygen or other equipment
  • Build a personal mobility plan that combines options instead of an all-or-nothing switch
