Stay Safe in Any Emergency book cover
Why I wrote this

Ten feet, six hours — and a phone that couldn't be reached

My friend Phil fell at home and wasn't found for six hours. He never walked again. The devices that could have called for help that day exist right now, and most of them fit on a wrist or in a pocket. This book explains them without the jargon — what a fall-detection watch actually does, how a medical alert works, which apps genuinely help — so you can choose what's right for you or someone you love, and set it up with confidence.

It's not about surveillance, and it's not about giving anything up. It's about being reachable, on your own terms, wherever you are, for any emergency.

What's inside

Every kind of "staying reachable," explained simply

Smartphones & smartwatches

Fall and crash detection, SOS shortcuts, GPS location sharing, and how to set them up so they actually work when it counts.

Smart rings & tablets

Discreet, comfortable monitoring for those who don't want a watch — plus tablets for staying connected to family and calling for help.

Wearable medical monitors

Continuous glucose monitors, ECG and stroke-risk sensors, seizure alert devices — what they do, and where their limits are.

Accessibility features

Screen readers, voice navigation, hearing-aid integration, and magnification tools already built into the phone you own.

Emergency SOS apps

A plain-language rundown of the apps worth having loaded and configured before you ever need them.

Emergency numbers, everywhere

A full reference of emergency, poison, and crisis numbers for the US and a companion booklet covering other countries — so you're never caught out travelling.

One honest note

These devices help you know when to ask — not replace your doctor

Every wearable and monitoring device in this book is covered with one governing principle in mind: none of it is a diagnosis. What it's genuinely good for is helping you know when it's time to seek medical advice, earlier and with better information than you'd otherwise have. That distinction is made clear throughout, device by device.

Real readers, real stories

Why this matters to people like you

"My Apple Watch saved my life when I fell and couldn't get up. It called my daughter and sent my location — it's like having a guardian angel on my wrist."
